Profile
Loughton in the lower Roding valley in south-west Essex is over 30 miles from the nearest Leofcilds (Leofcild 3 and Leofcild 9) and there is no reason to connect their holders. Leofcild’s 1 hide at Loughton included the only mill recorded there in DB (probably on the site of the later mill on the Roding, which formed the south-eastern boundary of Loughton) (VCH Essex IV, 116), as well as a share of the vill’s extensive woodland, which was in the later Epping Forest along the western side.Bibliography
