Profile
The three instances of Feolaga in DB represent the only occurrences of this name in pre-Conquest England. The three little estates of between ½ and 1¼ hides each are all close to one another in north-west Essex and, although because of an encroachment by Richard fitzGilbert (Richard 5) the three were not all held by the same post-Conquest successor in 1086, it is very probable that all three estates were held TRE by the same man, Feolaga 2.Feolaga 2’s largest estate was that at Bardfield (probably modern Great Bardfield) in the valley of the River Pant. DB records that Feolaga held it of (de) Earl Ælfgar (Ælfgar 46), although this formula does not certainly reveal if the lordship was one of commendation or dependent tenure, or both. This estate and a smaller but as yet unlocated one nearby at Hocsenga were the two listed in the invasiones, or encroachments, of Richard fitzGilbert. DB states that Richard held Bardfield despite it not having been held by his antecessor and also states that Richard held Hosenga in the same way, although this need not imply that Feolaga had similarly held Hosenga under Ælfgar’s lordship TRE.
Feolaga’s third estate was a tiny one at Ashwell, less than 2 miles to the east of Great Bardfield but passing to a different successor, Walter, by 1086. Taking his three estates together, Feolaga had five plough-teams of which at least one belonged to the peasant population of five villans and ten bordars and their households, who together with three slaves provided Feolaga’s workforce. There were also some small areas of woodland and 42 acres of meadow, but it is not certain that the mill recorded at Bardfield in 1086 had been there when Feolaga held the estate. At the Ashwell estate, the only one for which details of livestock are provided by DB, he had 1 cow, 30 pigs and 5 sheep. Feolaga clearly practiced mixed, but small-scale, agriculture on his lands.
There is no reason to consider Feolaga 2 in connection with any other person or estate.
