Profile
The location of Goldstan 7’s holding is uncertain and the suggestion that it was at Yeldham, in the Colne valley in north Essex, is speculative. He is recorded as one of four men (the others being Almær, Ælfric and Wulfric) who were co-holders of a tiny estate of just over ½ hides both TRE and in 1086 also. The DB entry occurs among those relating to the invasiones, or ‘encroachments’, of Richard fitzGilbert (Richard 5) and notes that the men’s land was being held by Richard’s subtenant Goismer; the implication is that the four men were now sub-subtenants of Goismer. DB does not state where this disputed land lay, but since the only other land that Goismer held from Richard was at Yeldham it may have lain in the same area.It is possible that Goldstan 7 was the same as Goldstan 9, a royal subtenant at a small estate in west Essex in 1086, because the name was rare and their lands were perhaps no more than 20 miles apart; but supporting evidence is lacking. There is no reason to connect Goldstan 7 with any other person.
