Profile

Pebmarsh, lying north of the Colne valley, was entirely in the hands of small free men and sokemen in 1066. Richard fitzGilbert was assigned the largest group (Essex 23:18) and annexed another small proprietor, Leofcild, on the grounds that he had been the man of his antecessor Wihtgar, even though commendation alone should not have been sufficient to give him rights to Leofcild’s land. Leofcild had only 3 acres, not separately valued in DB. Leofcild 7’s survival in 1086 argues against his being identical with Leofcild 6, whose rather larger estate at West Bergholt was only 10 miles away.
