Profile

Beorhtwulf 25 held a small 30-acre estate at Ovington in north Essex from Richard fitzGilbert (Richard 5) in 1086. It was the largest of a group of six very small holdings entered together in DB (in a note of disputes titled ‘Appropriations of Richard fitzGilbert’) that had a total assessment of only 63 acres, with a combined value of 30s TRE and of 45s 2d in 1086.

The list-like format of the DB entry is ambiguous, however, and it could indicate that all of the TRW subtenants had also been the TRE holders, as was certainly the case of the first person in the ‘list’ and as may also be implied by the collective reference to these men having had 3 ploughs TRE. If so, then Beorhtwulf was already holding his 30 acres TRE, when his lord will have been Richard’s antecessor Wihtgar, who DB notes as having ‘only commendation over these men’.
