Profile
Gauti 10 was listed (as Got flet) as one of the burgesses of Colchester in 1086, when he held 20 acres. His byname flet was interpreted by Rumble (1983: Notes to B3a, s.n. Got Fleet) as representing the Old Norse adjective fljotr (whence Middle English flete) ‘fleet, swift’, but it could equally well represent a toponym derived from Old English fleot ‘estuary, river(mouth)’ or similar (cf. Clark 1995: 328).Bibliography
