Profile

Huscarl 4’s estate was at Lower Clopton, lying between the Gran Brook and the western slopes of Meon Hill in what was then north-east Gloucestershire but was later transferred to Warwickshire.  The adjacent estate at Upper Clopton lay within a royal manor TRE and it may be that Huscarl’s estate had originated from a royal grant; but if so there is no further indication of this in DB or subsequent records.  DB records that a burgess in Winchcombe belonged to this estate, although the context implies that this refers to the situation in 1086 and that the connection with Winchcombe need not have existed when Huscarl held the estate.

Although substantial, his estate lay more than 70 miles from any other held TRE by someone called Huscarl and the name was not exceptionally rare in the late eleventh century, so there is no reason to consider Huscarl 4 in connection with any other person or estate.
