Profile

The precise location of Palli 3’s small estate is uncertain because no name is given to it in DB, only the fact that it lay in Bledisloe Hundred, one of the Gloucestershire hundreds lying to the west of the river Severn. The preceding entry related to Ruddle in Newnham, in Westbury Hundred, which was granted to Gloucester Abbey before 1100 (Elrington et al. 1972: 36-40), and some commentators have seen Palli’s unnamed estate as a part of Ruddle lying across the hundred boundary (Moore 1982: DB 58,3 Notes; Thorn 1989: 44). However, it is equally possible that Palli’s land included part of Blakeney (Currie and Herbert 1996: 14-46), 2½ miles to the south of Ruddle. Although a location at Ruddle has been adopted here for mapping purposes, therefore, the matter should be left open.

Despite the extreme rarity of the name there is no reason to associate Palli 3 with Palli 2, whose TRE estate lay in north Warwickshire and over 60 miles away from Ruddle. This seems too far removed for the two men to be connected given the sizes of their estates.
