Profile
Ebbi 3’s estate was at ‘Acton Ilger’, a lost place that took its manorial suffix from the 1086 subtenant Ilger (%% Hildegar), in Iron Acton parish on the river Frome in south Gloucestershire (Smith 1964-5: 3 1-2). Moore (1982: DB 6,1 Notes) states that the location of Ebbi’s manor was adjacent to Iron Acton church rather than at ‘Algar’s Manor’ a short distance to the south-west, pointing out that the latter is an antiquarian invention of c.1900.DB records that Ebbi was a man of Beorhtric son of Ælfgar (Beorhtric 36), a major thegn and landholder in the South-West TRE. The wording of the DB entry renders it more probable that Ebbi was commended to Beorhtric rather than being a dependent tenant of him.
