Profile

Strang 2, termed ‘the Dane’ (danus) in DB, held a substantial estate TRE at Shipton Moyne, just on the Gloucestershire side of the Foss Way that forms the shire boundary with Wiltshire here. It was his only estate, and no-one else of that name is recorded elsewhere in DB or, indeed, from pre-Conquest England. Both his name and his byname indicate that he was a Danish incomer (rather than being of insular birth), and the most straightforward explanation is that he arrived in England as a follower of King Cnut or his sons at some point between 1016 and 1042.
