The precise location of Dagobert 4’s small estate is uncertain. DB does not name it, recording only as ‘in the king’s demesne’ among the Welsh lands annexed to Gloucestershire in 1086. However, Moore (1982: DB W,11 Notes) makes a good case for identifying it as the part of Redwick manor that was not held by the king’s reeve, and this is the identification adopted here. If this is correct, then Dagobert’s estate was beside the Severn Estuary and will have lain within an area corresponding to the later Welsh commote of Libennith.
This is the only occurrence of someone called Dagobert in DB. It is unusual to find someone with a Continental Germanic name in the Welsh borderlands TRE, and at present no explanation for the presence there of Dagobert 4 can safely be offered.
