Profile
Theodger 5’s estate was at Mapledurham, a ‘lost’ place related to what is now Buriton between the South Downs and the Rother valley in east Hampshire (Munby 1982: 1,8 Notes). DB states that he ‘could not go elsewhere’, which implies that he was the dependent tenant of some lord. If so, that lord is most likely to have been Wulfgifu Beteslau (Wulfgifu 9), who was the TRE holder of the Mapledurham manor of which Theodger’s holding formed a part after the Conquest.Although Theodger 5’s name was extremely rare in pre-Conquest England there is no reason to consider a connection with either of the other two TRE landholders of that name, whose small estates lay over 50 and 80 miles respectively from Mapledurham.
