Profile
Herk 2’s estate formed part of the large episcopal manor of Fareham, where the Wallington River joins a tidal inlet of Portsmouth Harbour in south Hampshire. The manor was held by Stigand 1 in his capacity as bishop of Winchester TRE and DB states explicitly that Herk ‘could not withdraw from the bishop’, indicating that he held his land by dependent tenure.Although the name Herk was extremely rare, Herk 2’s estate was 75 miles from that of Herk 3 and too far distant for a connection between them to be considered; furthermore, they had different lords TRE and different post-Conquest successors.
