Profile

Æthelheard 27’s estate was at Treyford, on the South Downs in west Sussex.  DB states that TRE he held it of Earl Godwine 51, although Godwine had died in 1053 and his lands and lordships were probably in the hands of his widow, Gytha 1, even though DB often fails to record this (Williams 1981: 176-7).  It is not clear from the DB formula if Æthelheard’s relationship with Godwine had been that of a dependent tenant or one of commendation only.

DB notes that Treyford was assessed for 11 hides but then that 2 hides of the manor belonged to a prebend of Chichester cathedral and had been held by Offa 13 from bishop Æthelric 64 of Selsey TRE; it also notes that the abbot of St Peter’s, Winchester, claimed the manor and that the hundred supported this claim, testifying that the TRE holder had held it from the then abbot, Ælfwig 28, on a life-lease only.  If so, then it may be that Æthelheard 27 held Treyford on lease from Winchester but was commended to Earl Godwine.  Nevertheless, there is no evidence that the abbey was ever able to regain Treyford after the Conquest.

There is nothing to connect Æthelheard 27 with the only other TRE landholder of that name in DB.
