Summary
Æthelheard 28 held an estate in north-east Dorset in 1086 that was assessed for 1 hide and was worth 20s; he was a subtenant of Aiulf (Aiulf ) the sheriff.Profile
In 1086 Æthelheard 28 was a subtenant of Aiulf ‘the chamberlain’ [recte ‘sheriff’] (Aiulf ) with a small estate of 1 hide at Chettle in north-east Dorset. His name is spelt Airard in DB, which is a nonce form but more likely than not represents the name Æthelheard (Thorn and Thorn 1983: Notes to 49,7). There is nothing to connect Æthelheard 28 with either of the TRE landholders of that name, although it is possible that he was or was connected to the unnamed thegn that DB records as the TRE holder of Chettle.Bibliography
