Stenesnoc 2’s estate was at Heckfield, an area of high ground south of the Devil’s Highway and between the rivers Lyde and Whitewater in north-east Hampshire. The DB place-name Effelle, with Old English feld ‘open land’ as the generic and an uncertain qualifier, is not otherwise recorded but the later manorial descent confirms the location as Heckfield, a place-name whose forms that also show uncertainties as to the qualifier between OE hēah-feld ‘high open land’ and hecg-feld ‘hedge open land’ (Page 1911: 44-5; Coates 1989: 90).

DB records that Stenesnoc held his land of King Edward (Edward 15) and in allodium, which implies that he had power of alienation over his estate and was under the king’s lordship by commendation rather than dependent tenure.

This was the only estate recorded in DB as being held TRE by someone called Stenesnoc and is far removed from the few people called Steinn or Sten and so there is no reason to consider him in connection with any other estate or person.
