Profile
Steorra 3’s manor was in west Hampshire at Lockerley, on the River Dun a couple of miles to the west of its confluence with the Test; more precisely, Steorra’s manor may correspond to the later holding of Gambledown, straddling the parish boundary between Lockerley and Sherfield English (Page 1911: 500-2). DB describes him as holding it of King Edward (Edward 15) in allodium, indicating that he had the power of alienation over his land and was in the king’s lordship by commendation rather than dependent tenure. His manor was divided after the Conquest, with one hide passing to Hugh de Port (Hugh 10) and the other being taken into the royal forest, although not necessarily the New Forest (Munby 1982: 1,23; 23,40 Notes). The extreme rarity of the name and the association with a royal lord renders it conceivable that Steorra 3 is the same as Steorra 1, the rædesmann (steward or councillor) of King Harold 5 Harefoot at Sandwich in the late 1030s (S 1467; Robertson 1939: 174-9, 423; cf. von Feilitzen 1937: 374 n2). However, the evidence is too tenuous to allow the identification to be pressed with any conviction.
