Profile
The estate shared by Goldgifu 2 and Wulfric was at Burgate, on the low ground beside the River Avon just to the north of Fordingbridge in west Hampshire; the place-name may refer to an earthwork on the other side of the river and the estate was probably that later known as Over Burgate, now Upper Burgate (Page 1911: 569; Coates 1988: 44).DB records Wulfric and Goldgifu as holding their estate in allodium of King Edward (Edward 15), which implies that they had the power of alienation over their land and were in the king’s lordship by commendation rather than dependent tenure. The relationship between Goldgifu and Wulfric is uncertain but their shared tenure could indicate a familial connection; furthermore, since it was unusual for women other than nobles, abbesses or widows to hold land in their own right it may be that Goldgifu was a widow.
This was the only estate recorded in DB as being held by someone called Goldgifu TRE and there is no reason to consider her connection with any other estate or person.
