Profile

Shalfleet was a large manor in the western half of the Isle of Wight, centred on a settlement standing by the coast at the head of one of the inlets which formed the Newtown River. It belonged in 1086 to Joscelin fitzAzor, who had given small parcels of land to three men, Geoffrey, Turgis, and Leofa (Liofus). The resources of Turgis’s ½ hide and Leofa’s 1 hide were listed together and included 2 demesne ploughs. The value of the whole manor in 1086 was given as £15, and since there were 15 ploughs at work it is reasonable to suppose that Leofa’s land was worth in the region of £1.
