Profile
Godeza 3’s small estate was one of three at Nettlestone, on a spur just inland from the north-eastern coast of the Isle of Wight. Although the three estates had different values TRE, each was assessed for 1/3 hide and held in allodium under King Edward’s lordship, which suggests the tertiary division of a single estate at some point previously. That her estate was held in allodium implies that Godeza was under the king’s lordship by commendation rather than dependent tenure.Despite the extreme rarity of the continental name Godeza in pre-Conquest England the estate of Godeza 3 was too small and, at 110 miles, too distant from those of Godeza 2 in Kent for any connection between them to be considered.
