Profile

In 1066 Ruardean was a manor of 4 hides worth 30s. in the sole hands of Hadwig 3. It was then in Herefordshire, and may not have been transferred to Gloucestershire until the thirteenth century (Phill. Herefs. note 15:2). Ruardean stood among hills which reach 800 ft east of the Wye gorge, and is some 25 miles from Hadwig 2’s smaller properties in north Herefordshire. The two are unlikely to be the same man whether or not Hadwig 2 was also a moneyer at Hereford under William I. Ruardean is some 20 miles from Hereford and the identity of Hadwig 3 with the moneyer is less likely still.
