Profile

Langfer 3’s tiny manor was at Hargrave, among the low hills between the Nene and Ouse valleys in west Huntingdonshire and one of the smallest of four estates in a vill apparently divided between that shire and Northamptonshire, into which latter shire it was eventually transferred. By 1086 it was held by Eustace the sheriff (Eustace 2) but disputed by Tovi, probably representing one of Eustace’s numerous usurpations, and it is possible that Langer’s manor had been a temporary alienation from the large manor of Kimbolton (Palmer et al. 2002: DB Hunts. Ch.19, 19,13 Notes). If so, then Langfer may have been holding Hargrave as lease-land and as a dependent tenant of Earl Harold 3, the TRE holder of Kimbolton.

Although his name was extremely rare, Langfer 3’s manor was tiny and the nearest estate held TRE by another person of that name lay 26 miles away and had a different post-Conquest successor. It is therefore more likely than not that Hargrave was Langfer 3’s only estate.
