Profile

Buckland, on the edge of the Thames marshes in north Kent, was divided in 1066 between 3 yokes held by SiwardPASE no. and 1 yoke by Leofweard. If Siward’s name was, as seems likely, OE Sigeweard rather than ODan Sigwarth, then he and Leofweard shared a name-element. The two parts of Buckland were merged after the Conquest in the hands of Odo of Bayeux’s tenant Osbern Paisforiere, with a single set of manorial resources reported in DB, increasing the likelihood of a connection between the two TRE landowners. Leofweard of Buckland is not likely to have been identical with his nearest namesake, 25 miles away in south Essex, let alone any other Leofweard further afield.
