Profile

Deoring 8 was an Englishman who survived the Conquest, holding land in 1086 from two different newcomers to Lincolnshire. At the combined vill of Hough on the Hill and Brandon, 16 miles south of Lincoln, he had 3 carucates 3 bovates worth 40s. as a tenant of Gilbert de Ghent, and in one or both of the vills of Fulbeck and Leadenham, 4 miles towards Lincoln, he and Colegrim had 5¾ carucates as tenants of Count Alan.

Colegrim held land in his own right as a tenant-in-chief in 1086, and was certainly a wealthier individual than Deoring. From that point of view, Deoring’s association with him—whether as family member or client—may have been why he too survived as a landowner. But Deoring’s tenure under Gilbert de Ghent may have come first. In 1066 the holding in question, at Hough, had been sokeland of the manor of Folkingham, which belonged to Ulf Fenisc (Ulf 39); in 1086 Hough was still occupied entirely by sokemen rather than villans and bordars, but Deoring had been inserted as mesne lord between the sokemen and Gilbert, and indeed had created a small home farm with ½ plough. Conceivably he was a member of one of the local sokemen families who had made good.
