Othin 8 is named second in a list of four men holding a manor at Beesby, on the eastern side of a hill in the Wolds in north-east Lincolnshire, the other men being Ingimund, Eadric and Ecgwulf. The next entry in DB records sokeland of this manor lying at Wold Newton, on the western side of the same hill, and the following entry records four tiny manors at Wold Newton held by ‘Ingimund and his three brothers’ TRE. It is clear that the four men named in the first entry were the same as the four brothers noted in the third and that they shared the tenure of the lands. Those shares need not have been equal, however, because Ecgwulf’s land in the Beesby manor is recorded as 5½ bovates whereas an equal division of that manor would have yielded closer to 7 bovates for each brother.

Othin was a rare name and occurs elsewhere in Lincolnshire TRE but none of the other instances record the name in the form Oune, which could represent either Othin or Aun(i) a short form of the name (von Feilitzen 1937: 102, 169-70; Fellows Jensen 1968: xciv, 41-2). Furthermore, none of the other instances are associated with people who can be identified as Othin 8’s brothers or with Count Alan (Alan 1), the post-Conquest successor to the brothers’ estates. It is therefore probable that Beesby and Wold Newton were Othin 8’s only holdings TRE and that he was distinct from any other person of that name.
