Profile
Colswein 12 was a major tenant-in-chief in Lincolnshire in 1086, when he held estates assessed for 1032/3 carucates and worth more than £81 as tenant-in-chief and also held almost 15 carucates worth nearly £11 as subtenancies. The estates he held as tenant-in-chief had been held by some thirty or more different holders TRE and only one of whom, his nephew Cola, had any apparent connection with Colswein. He does not occur as a TRE holder himself. It looks very much as though Colswein’s fief represents a ministerial appointment by King William (William 1), and the suggestion that he was the town-reeve of Lincoln has much to commend it (Williams 1995: 107). His appointment may have intended to resolve the administrative void left by the flight of Mærleswein 1, sheriff of Lincolnshire, to Scotland in 1068, although it is notable that Colswein did not acquire any of Mærleswein’s estates. Colswein’s son Picot had succeeded to the barony before 1101 (King 1969: 86, 100), from whom it passed with Picot’s daughter to one of King Henry 5’s ‘new men’ (Keats-Rohan 1999: 175; Keats-Rohan 2002: 495-7).
Salzman (1938: 355) suggested that Colswein 12 was the same man as Colswein 9, presumably because they were Englishmen with the same uncommon name who held lands in the same general region after the Conquest and perhaps also because Colswein 12 was associated with Count Alan (of whom Colswein 9 was a subtenant) in a claim regarding an estate in north Lincolnshire. This identification is improbable, however, because the two men were at completely different levels of landholding and the later manorial descents of their lands appear to be unconnected, although it is just conceivable that the claim regarding the north Lincolnshire estate in fact involved Colswein 9 rather than Colswein 12.
