Profile

Iusten 9’s estate was at Newton by Toft, by a minor tributary of the River Ancholme in north Lincolnshire. He survived the Conquest and retained this estate in 1086, when it was assessed as waste although having land for one plough. He was then recorded among the ‘Other thegns’ in Lincolnshire in DB.

Newton by Toft is just under 20 miles from Normanton, the nearest of two very small estates held TRE by Iusten 8. Despite the small sizes of their respective estates this is probably close enough for them to have been held by the same man, particularly given the rarity of the name Iusten. Against this possibility, however, is that there is no other evidence that Iusten 8 survived the Conquest and that both his estates passed to Roger de Bully (Roger 17), who despite holding land in Lincolnshire in 1086 had no connection with Iusten 9. Furthermore, because all of the estates are small and in an area where names of Scandinavian origin are relatively common, the balance of probability is just in favour of regarding Iusten 8 and Iusten 9 as different men.
