Profile

Doding 4 is identified because although his name was extremely rare his estate was very small and, at about 30 miles, too far distant for any connection between him and the other men of that name TRE to be at all likely.

Doding 4’s estate was assessed at only 1 virgate yet included a mill. They were parts of the large vill of Stepney (Middlesex), named from what was then the only landing-place on the north bank of the River Thames to the east of London and where tidal mills are known to have existed among the marshes in the medieval period (Baker 1998: 5-7; Watts 2004: 574). His land lay among numerous estates at Stepney TRE, many of which, including the largest, were in the hands of the bishop of London (Kelly 2004: 86, 199). Doding’s estate was a part of the bishop’s manor and he was one of the bishop’s dependent tenants, unable to grant or sell his land without permission. It may be that he was responsible for running the mill on the bishop’s behalf and that his virgate was provided for the sustenance of himself and his family.

The value of Doding’s estate is not given explicitly in DB, being grouped together with two larger estates; but if the total value was divided in proportion to the assessments, Doding’s virgate would have been worth 6s 8d.
