Profile
Golding 2’s small estate lay in Spelthorne Hundred in south-west Middlesex. DB does not name the estate but it was possibly part of a previously unrecognized 5-hide vill associated with Hatton (see Hwætmann 4), a suggestion adopted here for mapping purposes although it should be noted that there is no support for the conjecture in the later manorial histories of Hatton (Page 1911: 309-14).DB describes Golding as the man of Earl Harold (Harold 3) and records that he could not sell or grant his land without permission, which formulae taken together suggest that he was both commended to Harold and one of the earl’s dependent tenants.
This was the only estate held TRE by someone called Golding recorded in DB and there is no reason to consider Golding 2 in connection with any other person or place.
