Profile
Olaf 11 and Alfred were subtenants of Earl Roger (Roger 4) who held a large estate of 10 hides at Harlington by the heaths of south-west Middlesex. Theirs was the only estate recorded by DB in the vill in 1086 and it is not known how the land was shared between the two men, but 2 hides had constituted a subholding of the main estate TRE and it is conceivable that this division continued under Olaf and Alfred. It is not impossible that the men were related, although Alfred had lands elsewhere and, to judge from the later manorial history, was probably the senior partner (cf. Reynolds 1962: 261-2). This constituted Olaf’s only estate, however, and there is no reason to associate him with any of the handful of men of that or a similar name who also held land in post-Conquest England.Bibliography
