Profile

Eadstan 25 was a burgess in Norwich TRE who held 18 acres of arable land and 12 acres of meadow around the borough together with 2 churches within it and a one-sixth share in a third; one of these churches also possessed 6 acres of meadow and a messuage.  Although it is difficult to estimate a value for Eadstan’s holdings, it is clear that he was among the more important of the burgesses; this is also suggested by his position as the first person to occur in the DB account of Norwich.

Nevertheless, the DB entry makes it clear that he was very much in King Edward’s lordship, being able neither to withdraw nor to ‘do homage’ without his licence, which suggests that Eadstan was the king’s man by both commendation and dependant tenure.  Given this circumstance, and that by 1086 his holding had passed to a sheriff, Roger Bigod (Roger 6), ‘by the king’s gift’, it may be that Eadstan performed some administrative or similar function for King Edward in the borough TRE.

Eadstan 25’s interests lay about 90 miles from those of any other person of that name TRE and there is no reason to consider him in connection with anyone else.
