Profile
A Rathi who did not survive to 1086 held two small east Norfolk manors some 10 miles apart: 1 carucate at Postwick just down the Wensum valley from Norwich, and ½ carucate at Tunstall, on the fringes of the vast Halvergate marshes inland from Great Yarmouth. The two holdings can be associated because two other men, Skule 2 and Skalpi 3, also had land at both places. Perhaps there was some connection between the three men: at Postwick, Rathi and Skalpi each had 1 carucate and 8 acres of meadow, while Skule had 2 carucates and 15 acres of meadow (Norf. 24:6), in effect arranged in the proportions 1:1:2; though the division of Tunstall was not so neat. This Rathi was probably not identical with Rathi of Gimingham (Rathi 2) only 20 miles away in north-east Norfolk.
