Profile

A Skalpi whose name was spelled in a distinctive way, dropping the initial letter, held two small manors some 10 miles apart in east Norfolk: 1 carucate at Postwick just down the Wensum valley from Norwich, and 80 acres at Tunstall, on the fringes of the vast Halvergate marshes inland from Great Yarmouth. The two holdings can be associated because two other men, Skule 2 and Rathi 3, also had land at both places. Perhaps there was some connection between the three men: at Postwick, Skalpi and Rathi each had 1 carucate and 8 acres of meadow, while Skule had 2 carucates and 15 acres of meadow (Norf. 24:6), in effect arranged in the proportions 1:1:2; though the division of Tunstall was not so neat.

In 1066 Skalpi had a home farm with a single ploughteam at each of his manors, but no recorded livestock. His other resources included a salt-house at Tunstall.

There is nothing to connect the Norfolk Skalpi with his namesake in south-east Suffolk and Essex (Skalpi 2), some 50 miles away.
