Profile
Manna 9’s small manor was at Little Snoring, centred on a small tributary valley of the River Stiffkey in north Norfolk. DB describes Manna as a free man and also records that there was an outlying part of his manor at Helhoughton, just over 6 miles to the south-west of Little Snoring and in the valley of the River Wensum. Quite how or when this tiny outlier, comprising only 3 acres and in the hands of a sokeman TRE, had become attached to Manna’s estate is unknown. As elsewhere in Norfolk, DB provides the TRE details of the estate’s resources as well as those in 1086. Before the Conquest Manna’s manor at Little Snoring was worked by a dependent population of 24 bordars (and no doubt their households) and one slave, with one plough on the arable of the demesne and another on the peasants’ land; the presence of a few cattle and a flock of sheep testify to the pastoral aspect of the estate. Manna also had a mill, presumably either on the stream running down near the present church to join another and thence the River Stiffkey or else perhaps on the Stiffkey itself. Finally, as well as the solitary sokeman at Helhoughton there were also six at Little Snoring, with 40 acres of land and a further two bordars.
Manna 9’s estate was small and lay well away from any other held TRE by someone with that or a similar name, and there is no reason for a connection with any other person to be considered.
