Profile

Shelton, in the low rolling countryside of south-east Norfolk, was divided up among free men and sokemen in 1066, without any manorial holding (Norf. 9:82, 98, 216). One of the larger peasants was Archbishop Stigand’s man Ealdwine, whose holding was assessed at ¼ carucate (30 acres). Its extent as a farm can be judged by the fact that in 1086 it had two ploughteams at work (one each for the lord and the peasants) and was occupied by 1 villan and 9½ (sic) bordars. Shelton was near the heart of the area south of Norwich where Stigand had scores of commended men, though Ealdwine was the only one in Shelton.
