Profile

The three Domesday estates ascribed to the name Gunni are much too far apart for their holders to be other than three distinct individuals. On the fertile light soils of north-east Norfolk a Gunni was one of five free men who occupied the whole of Suffield, probably with ½ carucate apiece; he alone was commended to King Edward’s Anglo-Breton servant Ralph the staller (Ralph 2), a major holder of lands and men throughout Norfolk and beyond.
