Profile
The larger of two holdings in the small vill of Wallington, on the edge of the marshlands of west Norfolk, was 100 fiscal acres worth 12s. which belonged TRE to the free man Thorsten (Turstinus liber homo). It was listed in LDB among the illegal annexations made by Hermer de Ferrers, illegal because ‘In this [he had] nothing except the commendation’ (In hoc nisi commendatio). This statement can only be understood as meaning that Hermer’s regular antecessor Thorketil was the commended lord of Thorsten but had no rights over Thorsten’s land at Wallington, and that Hermer had overstepped what was rightfully his by annexing Thorketil’s men, including Thorsten. Thorketil’s nearest manor to Wallington was immediately to the west at Thorpland (Norf. 13:6).Wallington is only some 12 miles from another Norfolk Thorsten, but there are no grounds for identifying the substantial free man at Wallington with Ely abbey’s small sokeman at Didlington (Thorsten 38).
