Profile

A third Norfolk Haghni, distinct from the king’s thegn in the south of the county (Haghni 2) and the king’s reeve of 1086 in the north (Haghni 3), can be distinguished in west Norfolk, holding the middling-sized manor of Pentney, on an ‘island’ in the marshes of the Nar valley. With its berewick just to the north at West Walton, Pentney was assessed at 4 carucates. There were no other holdings in either vill in 1066. Haghni ran a large home farm, with three ploughs at Pentney and one at Walton, all worked by slaves, and quite a large livestock operation, which included breeding horses (there were 20 mares) and an unusually large herd of cattle (21 strong), besides the usual pigs and sheep. There were three mills on the Nar and a third share of a salt-house in the marshes. Haghni also owned the church at Pentney, endowed with 30 acres of glebe.
