Profile
Langfer 2 held the larger of two little at Horn, in the small valley of the North Brook to the west of Ermine Street and in north Northamptonshire in DB but a part of Rutland by the thirteenth century. DB states that he held it of (tenuit de) King Edward (Edward 15) with sake and soke, this latter aspect perhaps making it more likely that Langfer was in the king’s lordship by commendation rather than by dependent tenure.Although the name Langfer was extremely rare the nearest estate held TRE by another person of that name was tiny and lay 26 miles away and Horn was the only one to be held in the king’s lordship TRE and to pass to the bishopric of Durham after the Conquest. It is therefore probable that this was Langfer 2’s only estate.
