Profile

Swetmann 13 had a holding at Croughton, overlooking a small tributary valley of the River Cherwell in the extreme south of Northamptonshire, which he held as a subtenant of Geoffrey 5 de Mandeville in 1086. It lay far from all other occurrences of the name Swetmann in DB except for those of two (or more) Oxford burgesses in 1086. It is conceivable that, because his name was uncommon and his little estate lay halfway between Oxford and Northampton, Swetmann 13 could be the same man as Swetmann 9, who was a moneyer at both boroughs; but there is no further evidence to support this suggestion and no reason to associate Swetmann 13 with anyone else.
