Profile

Olaf 12’s tiny holding of 1 virgate was at Weldon in the valley of the Willow Brook, a tributary of the River Nene, in north Northamptonshire. The DB entry occurs among a handful at the end of the survey of the shire, a position often recording the land’s of king’s thegns; but the entry states only that Olaf held of the king and does not indicate his role or status. Nevertheless, his soke was part of the royal manor of Corby, little more than a mile away, and it is tempting to see Olaf and his little estate at Weldon as a serjeanty adjunct to the royal manor. The only hint that it had a pre-Conquest existence rather than being a new creation is that the entry provides a TRE value of 2s to contrast with that of 3s in 1086. It was Olaf’s only estate and there is nothing to associate him with anyone else of that or a similar name recorded in DB.
