Profile

The two holdings only 5 miles apart along the Foss Way in south Nottinghamshire clearly belonged to the same Helghi, a different person from his namesake in distant Sussex. The more valuable of the two was Owthorpe, on the wolds, which had a low assessment of only ½ carucate but included land for 3 ploughs and was worth 30s. Most of Owthorpe was soke of the large manor of Shelford (Notts. 12:21) but there was a second ½-carucate manor with the same assessment and value as Helghi’s manor. At Bingham, Helghi and Hoga (Hoga ) had two manors comprising land for 1 plough worth 20s. The assessment was given as five and two thirds bovates; it so very nearly made up a round 4 carucates with the other manor in Bingham (3 carucates 2½ bovates) that a small error in one or other of the figures is likely: either Hoga and Helghi’s land was really 5½ bovates, or the other manor was 3 carucates and two and a third bovates. In either case, the way in which the assessment was divided almost matched the division of the vill’s arable into shares of 1 and 5 ploughlands.
