Profile

Willoughby-on-the-Wolds, an upland parish (as the place-name suffix indicates) right on the border of Nottinghamshire with Leicestershire, was much subdivided TRE. Esbern 8 held one of five tiny manors; it had passed by 1086 to a minor king’s thegn called Alwine, and was recorded in a Domesday entry which was amended to add the name of another holder TRE (Wulfmær) and in 1086 (Earnwine). The small size and isolation of the manor make it clear that Esbern 8 held only here. He was presumably a minor king’s thegn like his successor Wulfmær.
