Profile

Sweting 9 had a small estate of 1½ hides worth 40s in south Oxfordshire in 1086, which he held as the subtenant of Abingdon Abbey, and in DB the entry follows one for 7½ hides at Garsington and describes Sweting’s estate as ‘in the same vill’. However, in a list of late eleventh-century abbey tenants owing knight-service at Windsor Castle given in the later Abingdon Chronicle, the 7½ hides at Garsington are followed by 1½ hides at Wheatley on which Sueting avus Matthiæ ‘Sweting grandfather of Matthew’ owed knight-service (Stevenson 1858: ii 3-5). It is not clear, therefore, if Sweting’s lands formed a part of the abbey’s estate at Garsington or of its adjacent one at Cuddesdon, within which Wheatley lies (Lobel 1957: 96-116; Kelly 2000: 293-8, 374-5, 583). In either case, however, it is unlikely that Sweting 9 was the same man as Sweting 10, who held land about 13 miles to the north-east of Garsington, because the latter’s holding was very small and the men had different lords.
