Yagdon, a lost vill locatable through minor place-names on the flat plain 5 miles north-west of Shrewsbury (PN Salop. I, 332–3), was retained in 1086 by its pre-Conquest owner Ealdwine. In 1066 he held as a free man; in 1086 directly from Earl Roger de Montgomery, as one of the earl’s thegns. Ealdwine’s land was assessed at ½ hide and worth 5s. at both dates. In 1086 he farmed it with 1 plough and 2 bordars as his tenants.
