Profile

It is conceivable that Theodric 10 was identical with Theodric 6 ‘the goldsmith’, since the latter is known to have been a thegn and servant of King Edward, and may have acquired parcels of property a long way apart as function of royal patronage. However, this identification has been rejected on the following grounds: the distance between Somerset and Surrey is considerable; the Somerset estates are smaller than Theodric the goldsmith’s five-hide estate at Kennington; Theodric the goldsmith continued to hold Kennington and estates elsewhere in 1086, whereas there is no evidence that Theodric of Ford was a landholder at that date; and unlike those of Theodric 6, the estates of Theodric of Ford are not listed in the ‘ministerial’ folios at the end of the Somserset Domesday.

Theodric of Ford and of ‘Theodric’s land’ could have been different individuals since these two estates passed to different successors. However, the name is uncommon, and the estates were of a similar size and were located close together: ‘Theodric’s land’ cannot be precisely located, but it occurs in a sequence of estates in Cannington Hundred, which was adjacent to the Taunton Hundred of which Ford formed part. For this reason they have been attributed to the same individual.
