Profile
The TRE landowner’s name at Carlingcott, on the Cam brook some six miles north of the Mendips in north Somerset, has not hitherto been recognized as Godrun. The scribe of the entry in Exon initially wrote the name as Goderana, then substituted an o over the first a to change it to Goderona (though mistakenly placed a dot under the n instead of the a) (Exon 276b2). The scribe of GDB misread or miswrote the name as Godeman, i.e. Godmann, a male name which may well have been more familiar to him than Godrun. The Exon form, however, should take priority. The other occurrences of the name in the Domesday material, in Winchester in 1066 and Oxford in 1086, and as the name of a Suffolk peasant’s mother, are too far from Somerset for any connections to be possible.
