Profile
Cynegifu 2’s solitary estate was at Thorne Giffard, a couple of miles to the north-west of Yeovil in south Somerset. No-one else of that name was recorded in DB and the Phillimore translation (Thorn and Thorn 1980: DB 19,77) renders this name as Cynwy, thereby indicating the masculine name Cynewig rather than the feminine Cynegifu. Nevertheless, the DB spelling Cheneue and the Exon (279b1) spelling Cheneua are much more likely to represent Cynegifu rather than Cynewig, which is otherwise spelt Cheneuui or Chenui in DB (cf. von Feilitzen 1937: 220-1).Bibliography
