Profile
The name Mereswith occurs only once in DB, as holder of an estate of ½ hide at Chilton Trivett, close to the great royal manor of Cannington between the lower slopes of the Quantocks and the Parrett Levels. The other DB holding at Chilton Trivett was also assessed at ½ hide and had exactly the same resources as Mereswith’s share, namely land for 2 ploughs, 6 acres of meadow, 8 acres of pasture, and 16 acres of wood (Som. 21:23). A relatively recent division seems likely, though not so recent that the number of peasant households or ploughteams was the same on the two parts. Whereas Mereswith’s manor had a watermill, or shared one the neighbouring manor of Gothelney (Som. 21: 15) (the facts differ between Exon 425a1 and GDB), the other holding at Chilton did not (Phill. Som.: general note 21,24). Any family relationship between Mereswith and the other landowner at Chilton, Leofgar 13, is thus uncertain at best.Bibliography
