Profile

Sarpa occurs only once in DB, as the holder of one of the clutch of very small estates at Exford on the upper Exe in the heart of Exmoor. These were small moorland farms, Sarpa’s having land for only ½ plough and being assessed at 1½ ferdings. Its modest size and marginal status are underlined by the fact that in 1086 it had been laid down to pasture (jacet in pastura) and was rented for just 12d. Sarpa was in effect a small peasant farmer, and probably a stockman rather than an agriculturalist.
